The metal disk is to adjust the grip distance, the plastic on the end is to adjust the tension hence the grip strength needed.
On the other hand, what I assume is a metal pin is not the most secure and coupled with the little play in can cause the plastic to collide. and the metal arm to metal disk seems it will cause a problem in the future or at least need lubrication.
